It’s a long-running tradition at the World Dairy Expo. But did you know the Forage Analysis Super Bowl is also considered one of the premiere forage quality competitions in the industry?
Dan Undersander is a retired University of Wisconsin-Madison forage expert. He organized the contests years ago. And he remains interested in how farmers are improving their feed.
“It’s always good to come by and see good forage,” Undersander explained to the Mid-West Farm Report’s Larry Lee. “It’s really important. I think a lot of what we did is to have some high quality samples on sale to give people an idea of what good forage looks like, how it feels, and what it smells like. There are always people from all over the world looking at these samples and seeing what we’re doing, so I think the contest has had a big impact on forage quality around the world.”
Undersander says the contest added balage around 15 years ago, when it was getting more popular.
“Originally, it was just corn silage and alfalfa. But we’re up to nine categories now,” he said.
The contest continues to get several hundred entries each year. But only the top ten are on display at World Dairy Expo.
