Pork Sees Slight Production Increase

Prepared and written by Jeff Swenson, DATCP Livestock and Meat Specialist. The Market Update draws information from several sources, including trade publications, radio broadcasts, agricultural news services, individuals involved in the industry as well as USDA NASS and AMS reports.

Pork production is only slightly above last year, and year-to-date pork exports are about 4% higher than 2025. Hog prices are below this time last year, however. Pork production typically increases as fall approaches and temperatures cool, so it is likely there will be heavier hogs soon. There has not been expansion in the sow herd, but productivity is making more pigs available. The pork cutout value was 6 cents lower last week, averaging $100.45, and has fallen below the $100 level of support this week. It is estimated that 2.334 million hogs were harvested last week, 63,000 more than the previous week and 83,000 fewer than last year. Feeder pig prices continue to decrease. Forty-pound pigs averaged $67.29/head last week with early weaned pigs averaging $49.16/head.
