Wisconsin officials say simple safety measures could prevent many of the state’s off-road crash fatalities.
29 Deaths So Far in 2026
Currently, Wisconsin leads the nation in fatal ATV/UTV incidents. According to Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) statistics, failing to wear helmets and seatbelts caused most of the 29 fatal incidents recorded so far in 2026. A third major factor in these fatalities is riders failing to complete a safety education course.
“This is a troubling trend,” said Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, DNR off-highway vehicle administrator. “Completing safety education and utilizing helmets and seatbelts are simple ways to protect yourself and passengers while out riding. Not all crashes are 100% preventable, but the odds of surviving a crash drastically increase when safety equipment is properly worn.”
DNR records show 13 of the 29 fatal incidents in 2026 involved ATVs, while 16 involved UTVs. The top three types of fatal crashes were rollovers (15), collisions with motor vehicles (6), and ejections from the machine (4). Riders have also self-reported 49 nonfatal ATV/UTV crashes this year.
Be Safe
DNR officials urge riders to follow these safety tips:
Always ride completely sober.
Wear helmets, seatbelts, and eye protection—even when loading and unloading machines.
Obey all speed limits, regulatory signs, and stop signs.
Keep lights on, stay to the extreme right of the traffic lane, and maintain a safe speed while on routes.
Take a safety class regardless of age requirements.
“Many of the crashes could be prevented simply by adopting a safety code of conduct,” Lt. Holsclaw said. “Ride sober and reasonably, avoid risky behavior and always ride with proper safety attire and education.”
Report All Crashes
Wisconsin law requires operators involved in a crash to report it to law enforcement immediately. Operators must also submit a written report (Form 4100-174) to the DNR within 10 days of the incident.
