Wisconsin dairy students have been awarded scholarships from the Arthur B. Klussendorf Memorial Association and the McKown/Klussendorf Fund. The Klussendorf Scholarships have been granted to students who most nearly exemplify the character and ethics of the late and legendary showman and dairy cattle fitter, Arthur B. Klussendorf. McKown Scholarships recognize four students from Holstein backgrounds who demonstrate excellence in leadership, judging and cattle presentation, in memory of Robert “Whitey” McKown.
Winners of the Klussendorf Scholarship are Summer Hammann, Brianna Meyer and Matthew Winch. McKown Scholarship honors go to Claire Betley, Campbell Booth, Shelby Swanson and Lauryn Young.
Klussendorf Scholarships
Summer Hammann of Barron, Wisconsin is majoring in dairy science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her goal is to become a herdsman, working hands-on with dairy cattle, focusing on herd health, reproduction and overall performance. Her guidance towards this goal has been her background on her family’s dairy, as well as highly relevant internships and leadership in extracurricular activities.
Brianna Meyer of Chilton, Wisconsin aspires to become a large-animal veterinarian. She attends the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is active in dairy-related research, the dairy judging team and Badger Dairy Club. Coming from a strong, hands-on background on her family’s dairy, she also hopes to be involved in the industry outside of her career as a youth development volunteer and agriculture advocate.
Matthew Winch of Fennimore, Wisconsin majors in dairy and food animal management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he also hopes to attend veterinary school. He was born into a family that lived and worked on a dairy farm, where he has been active in different capacities throughout his life. His goal is to return to his home area to not only support farmers in his community but also keep his family’s farm alive.
McKown Scholarships
Claire Betley of Pulaski, Wisconsin is pursuing a degree in agricultural business with a certificate in dairy cattle production and management from Iowa State University. Having grown up on her family’s dairy, she plans to return home to a management role on the farm. She has ambitions of focusing on herd management, operational efficiency and adapting to industry changes.
Campbell Booth of Plymouth, Wisconsin attends the University of Minnesota where she is active in the Gopher Dairy Club, Agricultural Business Club and CFANS Mentor Program. Her background in the dairy industry has fostered an interest in cheese: something that Booth believes can help bridge gaps between producers, processors and consumers. Through her future career, she hopes to promote high-quality cheese and strengthen the demand for dairy.
