If you are a sheep or goat producer, you’ll want to save-the-date for this year’s Parasite Patrol Tour when it stops in Wisconsin. It’s your opportunity to sharpen your parasite management skills through this multi-state educational program.
The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is working in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension and will be in Outagamie County on Friday, Sept. 25.
The workshop will run from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at Osborn Town Hall, W3389 County Road EE, Seymour. It costs $30, and advance registration is required.

Fighting parasite resistance
One of the biggest challenges facing sheep and goat producers is the growing resistance of parasites to traditional deworming treatments.
The Parasite Patrol workshop will focus on science-based strategies that help producers determine when treatment is actually needed. Many still rely on reaching for a dewormer on a set calendar.
The goal is to improve animal health while reducing an unnecessary treatment and the cost associated with it.
Producers will get hands-on experience
The Outagamie County workshop will combine classroom information with practical training.
You’ll learn how parasite life cycles affect sheep and goats, along with what can contribute to dewormer resistance. And you’ll get a hands on demonstration on how to use fecal egg counts to make more informed treatment decisions.
This updated approach is designed to share the tools you can take back to your own farm and use as part of a long-term parasite management program.
You are also strongly encouraged to bring a fresh sheep or goat fecal sample collected within 24 hours of the workshop. Samples should be kept refrigerated until the event.
