Want to support local wildlife? The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites everyone to join Operation Deer Watch and the Game Bird Survey.
These summer surveys measure adult-to-young ratios—such as fawn-to-doe counts—to track how well species are reproducing across the state. By combining your sightings with annual harvest reports, DNR scientists gain the vital data they need to make smart, science-backed management decisions.
“Wherever you are in Wisconsin, you can get involved and collect data in your area,” said Paul Frater, DNR surveys coordinator. “Sightings can easily be submitted through our Survey123 app, and every submission helps us better understand how wildlife are doing throughout the state. The more data that is collected, the better our understanding of game species abundance and distribution in Wisconsin. The DNR encourages everyone interested in wildlife – from hunters and trappers to outdoor enthusiasts – to take part.”

1. Operation Deer Watch
Log the location, age, sex, and total number of deer you spot between dawn and dusk. This data helps establish fawn-to-doe ratios and powers statewide population estimates.
Deadline: September 30
2. Game Bird Survey
Record the types and numbers of game birds you see throughout the summer. These counts reveal how successfully game birds reproduced during the current breeding season.
Deadline: August 31
