Cattle Feeders Field Comes To Menomonie

UW–Madison Extension will host a Cattle Feeders Field Day on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, offering practical strategies to improve cattle finishing operations during a time of strong cattle markets and tight production margins.

With cattle prices at record highs, effective management remains essential for maintaining profitability. This hands-on educational event will bring together UW–Madison Extension regional educators and specialists to address timely, real-world topics for producers of all sizes. 

The twilight field day will take place at the Jensen Family farm, E3677 370th Ave., Menomonie, Wisconsin. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m., with the program starting at 6:00 p.m. 

Program Highlights

Attendees will gain insights into key areas of cattle feeding management, including:

• Feed management and corn silage quality — Dr. Luiz Ferraretto, Ruminant Nutrition Extension Specialist, will discuss strategies to minimize storage losses and improve feed efficiency, as well as how poor management can negatively impact animal performance. 
• Handling and facility design for finishing cattle — Regional Livestock Educator Ryan Sterry and State Beef Outreach Specialist Bill Halfman will share practical guidance on developing efficient, safe, and cost-effective handling facilities. 
• Chute-side demonstrations and cattle receiving practices — Presenters will cover best practices for receiving cattle along with proper vaccine and pharmaceutical handling techniques. 

In addition to educational sessions, the Jensen family will provide an overview of their farming operation and lead a tour of their new mono-slope cattle feeding facility. 

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for producers finishing beef or dairy breed cattle, as well as individuals from allied agricultural industries seeking to improve operational efficiency and animal performance.
