Fed Lamb Prices Slide As Harvest Jumps

Prepared and written by Jeff Swenson, DATCP Livestock and Meat Specialist. The Market Update draws information from several sources, including trade publications, radio broadcasts, agricultural news services, individuals involved in the industry as well as USDA NASS and AMS reports.

Fed lambs were $7-$15/cwt lower last week with market ewes called soft. The lamb cutout value was about $1 lower than the previous Friday at $617.19. The estimated harvest of 32,000 was 7,000 higher than the previous week and 12,000 fewer than last year. April exports of U.S. lamb muscle cuts totaled 231 metric tons, down 10% from a year ago, while value fell 16% to $1.2 million. Year-to-date exports are still outpacing last year, however, led by growth in the Bahamas, Netherlands Antilles, and Leeward-Windward Islands.
