A Family Roadmap To Assisted Living

The transition from a longtime family home to an assisted living facility is one of the most challenging milestones a family can face. In a recent interview with Mid-West Farm Report, Wisconsin Assisted Living Association President and CEO Mike Pochowski highlights that the struggle often stems from a deep-rooted desire for autonomy.

“We’re all very independent, and we want to be as independent as long as possible,” he notes, acknowledging that moving after 20 or 30 years in one place is never an easy conversation to initiate.

To ease the process, Pochowski suggests focusing on the positive trade-offs, such as increased social interaction and professional safety monitoring for those prone to falls or memory issues. He recommends involving a wide support network, including adult children, siblings, or even close friends, to help vet facilities and ask overlooked questions during tours.

“It’s a big move to have to do so, and so you just want to have as many trusted people that are there with you,” he says, reminding families that a collective approach is the best way to find a “home-like” environment.

For those in Wisconsin, resources like the Aging and Disability Resource Center and specialized websites like whereyoulivematters.org offer information on pricing, state surveys, and Medicaid eligibility.

Recent state budget enhancements for Medicaid waiver programs are aimed at shortening waitlists and improving affordability, Pochowski continues. Looking toward the future, he emphasizes the need for continued partnership with state leadership to ensure quality care is accessible to everyone.
