Lamb Cutouts Move Sharply Higher

Prepared and written by Jeff Swenson, DATCP Livestock and Meat Specialist. The Market Update draws information from several sources, including trade publications, radio broadcasts, agricultural news services, individuals involved in the industry as well as USDA NASS and AMS reports.

Lamb

The lamb market last week was called unevenly steady. This follows several weeks of firm prices. The lamb carcass cutout was $4.23 higher than the previous Friday at $514.43. The estimated harvest last week was 4,000 head, 6,000 more than Thanksgiving week and 3,000 head more than last year. Even with a larger harvest, lamb and mutton production was lower. The average live weight of lambs processed last week was 113 pounds compared to 123 pounds a year ago. New crop lambs were higher, selling from $210 -$239/cwt. Light lambs were higher from $215-$370/cwt.
