Farmer Mental Health Grant Supports Unmet Needs

The St. Croix Valley Food Alliance, a special project of Wisconsin Farmers Union, has been awarded funding through the Vibrant Communities Mental Health Grant Program. The Northwest Alliance Community Foundation and The St. Croix Valley Foundation support the program.

The initiative, titled “Wellbeing & Waterways: Supporting Farmer Health,” aims to break down barriers to mental health care for farmers. It also aims to reduce stigma and build community connections. The program will provide Mental Health First Aid training in partnership with the Mental Health Task Force of Polk County. The training focuses on local resources and farmer-specific challenges.

Off-site retreats will encourage skill development, collaboration, and stress management in a supportive environment tailored to the farming community.

“Caring for farmers means caring for our land, food, and shared future,” says SCVFA board member and mental health advocate Rachael Drumsta. “This grant helps address unmet needs, supporting those who sustain a thriving local food economy.”
