Representative Pushes Rural Health Priorities

Today, the Make America Healthy Again Commission report targeted unhealthy food, among other things, as a cause of chronic illness in children. Healthy eating has also been a theme in the state Legislature.

Assembly Agriculture Committee Vice Chair Rep. Clint Moses authored two healthy food bills that had hearings over the past few weeks. Moses also chairs the Committee on Health, Aging and Long-Term Care.

Assembly Bill 226 aims to create healthier school lunches by removing a precise list of food additives and food dyes allowed in the school lunch programs in order to promote healthier lifestyles to prevent chronic disease.

Assembly Bill 180 aims to create healthier options for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients.

“Basically, what that bill does is it eliminates the ability for people to be buying junk food, specifically high-sugar like sodas… candies, and stuff like that,” he says. “Our hope would be that people would not only eat healthier, but they’re supporting products that are made right here in Wisconsin… potatoes, cranberries — all that stuff is still included because it’s nutritious and healthy for you.”

Supporting Emergency Medical Services and healthy agricultural land are also on the priority list for Rep. Moses. Moses grew up on a dairy farm and was raised by an agriculture teacher. He currently raises beef cattle. Hear his full conversation with the Mid-West Farm Report:
