The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds anglers that the 2025-2026 general inland fishing season will open statewide on Saturday, May 3.
With over 15,000 inland lakes, 42,000 miles of perennial streams and rivers, 1,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, and 260 miles of Mississippi River, there are plenty of great places to fish over opening weekend.

All anglers age 16 or older, both residents and nonresidents, are required to purchase a fishing license. Annual resident licenses cost $20, or you can buy a spousal license for $31, allowing you and your spouse to fish together. Licenses and stamps can be purchased online via Go Wild, at registered sales locations, or at DNR Service Centers.
As anglers head to their fishing spots across the state, the DNR has some important reminders:
- Help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species by removing plants and animals from boats before and after launching. Drain all water from compartments and never move live fish between waterbodies.
- To prevent the spread of fish diseases, remove all water, aquatic vegetation, and mud from fishing equipment before leaving your fishing spot. Thoroughly clean and dry all fishing gear, including boats, trailers, boots, waders, nets, and float tubes.
- If you’re not keeping your catch, follow proper fish handling protocols for a safe release.
- Always wear a life jacket when boating and follow safe boating procedures.
- Review all rules and regulations for the waters you intend to fish.
