Koenig Named 2025 GrassWorks Grazing Advocate

Serge Koenig, Conservation Analyst for the Sauk County Land Resources & Environment (LRE), has been named the 2025 GrassWorks Jerold Berg Grazing Advocate. This recognition comes as he marks his 31st year with Sauk County.

Since 2015, Koenig has been a strong voice for grass-based agriculture at local, regional, and state levels. He works to educate farmers, policymakers, and the public about the health, economic, and environmental benefits of grazing. His passion and knowledge have made him a trusted mentor for graziers across Wisconsin.

Koenig has helped convert nearly 5,000 acres of cropland and overgrazed pasture into rotationally grazed pasture in Sauk County. His hands-on approach helps farmers see the value of grazing while offering them personalized support.

Beyond his work with farmers, Koenig collaborates with several community groups, including Sauk Soil & Water Improvement Group, Powered Up Baraboo, and the Aldo Leopold Foundation. Through educational programs, he raises awareness about grazing’s benefits, encourages local purchases of grass-fed meat, and promotes sustainable farming.

“Grazing isn’t just about farming—it’s about healthier land, stronger communities, and thriving local economies,” Koenig said. “I’m honored to support this movement and the farmers leading the way.”

Koenig’s dedication continues to shape Wisconsin’s agricultural landscape, creating lasting benefits for both farmers and rural communities.
