The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has named Steve Hubner of Darlington as the 2024 State Natural Areas Volunteer of the Year. Hubner was recognized for his nearly 40 years of volunteer work at various properties statewide, including the Muralt Bluff Prairie State Natural Area.
Hubner earned a degree in natural resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In the late 1980s, he helped form the Prairie Bluff Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts in Green County. Partnerships like this are vital for maintaining Wisconsin’s 406,000 acres of state natural areas, with groups such as The Prairie Enthusiasts co-owning properties like Muralt Bluff Prairie.
Since retiring in 2012, Hubner has averaged 800 volunteer hours per year. His work includes removing invasive brush, collecting seeds, and assisting with prescribed burns. He also volunteers at Yellowstone Lake State Park, helps private landowners maintain rare prairies in Lafayette County, and contributes to the Wisconsin Frog and Toad Survey.
“Steve is passionate about native prairies and their beauty. His awe and practical approach to conservation are inspiring,” said Jared Urban, DNR state natural areas volunteer coordinator. “He enjoys sharing his enthusiasm with others, especially newcomers.”
Hubner is also committed to mentoring the next generation of volunteers. “Without continued volunteer efforts, these remnants won’t survive,” he said. “We’re battling new invasives, and we need younger generations to keep the work going.”
