
Dry weather early in the week allowed for good progress harvesting crops. Midweek saw the start of widespread precipitation events, including snowfall in areas. This delayed harvest, but improved soil moisture and winter wheat conditions. The cranberry harvest was mostly finished during the week. Other field activities included spreading manure and fall tillage as conditions allowed. The Crop Progress and Condition report released by the USDA shares details on how things are looking.
Corn for grain was 81 percent harvested. That’s 19 days ahead of last year and 20 days ahead of the 5-year average. Moisture content of corn harvested for grain remained at 17 percent. Meanwhile, soybean harvest was nearly complete at 98 percent.
Eighty-two percent of the winter wheat crop has emerged, 3 days ahead of last year and 5 days ahead of average. Winter wheat condition was rated 72 percent good to excellent, up 6 percentage points from last week. Fall tillage was 63 percent complete.
