With the growing interest in sustainable practices and local food production, beekeeping has become an essential part of modern agriculture. Recognizing the need for a dedicated event in the region, beekeepers Bill Werning and Doug Koltermann have created the Midwest Honeybee Expo. The expo will debut in January 2025 in Waukesha, serving as a vital gathering for beekeepers of all levels. It will offer educational opportunities, networking, and the latest in beekeeping innovations.
Event Highlights and Key Speakers
The Midwest Honeybee Expo will feature renowned speakers, educational sessions, and also a wide array of vendors showcasing the latest in beekeeping products. “We saw the void in the space and the need for an expo here. We are organizing this event to bring an opportunity for people to educate themselves through big-name speakers and also explore various products from many vendors,” added Koltermann.
Two of the speakers include:
- Michael Bush: Michael Bush commands great respect in the beekeeping community. He authored The Practical Beekeeper and Beekeeping Naturally and speaks internationally on beekeeping.
- Peggy DeSanto: Peggy DeSanto is a cofounder of the Hive Hugger winterization system. She will discuss her innovative condensing style of overwintering bees, a method that has proven effective in colder climates.

Who Should Attend
The event welcomes beekeepers at all levels, with a particular focus on hobbyist and sideliner beekeepers. “We really want to make those folks feel welcome,” Koltemann emphasized. “We’re going to indulge them with speakers and vendors that will provide the information they need to become more successful beekeepers in their endeavors.”
