As the Mother’s Day weekend approaches, Kopke’s Greenhouse is gearing up for what promises to be another busy season. Founded in 1981 Kopke’s began with just a couple of greenhouses aimed at supporting a vegetable truck farm. Over the years, the focus shifted towards ornamental flowers, prompting continuous expansion. Today, the operation boasts an impressive 33 greenhouses. Each are filled to the brim with a wide array of flowers, veggie plants, and more.
Despite the challenges posed by fluctuating weather patterns, Kopke’s remains committed to providing quality plants. By using flexible strategies, including adjusting watering schedules and utilizing supplemental lighting, they ensure that each plant receives the care it deserves.
The lead-up to Mother’s Day sees a significant uptick in customer traffic. Kopke’s will see numbers of about a thousand visitors per day in the days before the holiday.
“Our loyal customer base, some of whom have been with us for decades, continues to grow,” says Josh Smith, co-owner of Kopke’s Greenhouse. “We’re also seeing an influx of newcomers, from seasoned gardeners to first-time plant parents. It’s heartening to witness this enthusiasm for gardening, especially among younger generations.”
Hanging baskets and four-inch plants are the top sellers during the Mother’s Day season. Smith says customers wants vibrant, ready-to-display arrangements. Additionally, perennials have seen a surge in popularity in recent years. He says this is due to more individuals wanting long-lasting beauty in their gardens.
As the Mother’s Day rush approaches, Smith anticipates selling well over a hundred thousand plants throughout.
“Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or starting on your first gardening journey, we’re here to help,” he says. “Come explore our greenhouses, ask questions, and let us be a part of your gardening experience.”
