Nearly every day last week was perfect for fieldwork across Wisconsin. The dry weather allowed for farmers to make quick progress for planting and making hay. But the dry spell has producers hoping for rain to aid crop germination and restore soil moisture.
The latest crop progress and condition report from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service says topsoil moisture condition rated 10 percent very short, 35 percent short, 53 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 4 percent very short, 23 percent short, 68 percent adequate and 5 percent surplus.
Spring tillage was reported as 95 percent complete, 10 days ahead of last year and nine days ahead of the 5-year average.
Corn planting was 90 percent complete, nine days ahead of last year and 10 days ahead of average. Fifty-two percent of the corn crop has emerged, a day ahead of last year and a day ahead of the average. Corn condition was 82 percent good to excellent.
Soybean planting was 82 percent complete, six days ahead of last year and nine days ahead of the average. Thirty- nine percent of the soybean crop has emerged, a day ahead of last year and two days ahead of the average.
Ninety-three percent of the expected oat crop has been planted, nine days ahead of last year and a week ahead of the average. Sixty-two percent of the oat crop has emerged, three days behind the average. Oat condition was 84 percent good to excellent, down 3 percent from last week.
Winter wheat was 10 percent headed, three days ahead of last year and a day ahead of average. Winter wheat condition was rated 81 percent good to excellent statewide, down 3 percent from last week.
Potato planting was reported as 90 percent complete, five days ahead of last year and a day ahead of the average.
The first cutting of alfalfa was reported at 33 percent complete, five days ahead of last year and six days ahead of the average. All hay condition was reported 79 percent good to excellent statewide, up 1 percent from last week.
And pasture condition was rated 76 good to excellent statewide, equal to last week.
