PDPW Gives Key To Dairy Success

The world’s political and economic landscape is evolving more quickly than ever and every change has implications for agricultural markets and dairy producers. Keynote sessions at the 2023 Business Conference presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) will further explore the geopolitical and
economic forces at work around the globe and provide insights to help today’s dairy producers navigate the uncertain times ahead. Hands-On Hub sessions will introduce attendees to new technologies and tools to improve critical management practices.

Scheduled for March 15-16, 2023, at the Kalahari Resorts in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., the conference will feature nearly 60 keynote, break-out, hands-on and other sessions. Additionally, the Nexus® stage will feature the newest dairy innovations and the Preview Stage will highlight ongoing dairy-related university research.

The Wednesday opening keynote, “What in the world? Global politics and evolving markets,” will feature Dan Basse, president of AgResource Company, and Jacob Shapiro, partner and director of geopolitical analysis for Cognitive Investments. The pair will identify key geopolitical forces expected to shape the next five years with an emphasis on trade protectionism, conflicts between great powers and the coming worldwide macro developments expected to affect dairy producers and other major agricultural commodities.

Thursday’s keynote session will lend the stage to Dr. Ed Seifried, PhD, professor emeritus of Economics and Business at Lafayette College. During “Making sense out of an economic whirlwind”, Dr. Seifried will break down macro-economic indicators expected to be the most impactful on business decisions in months and years to come. Dr. Seifried will bring his experience as an economist, faculty member and dean of banking schools, and executive consultant to explain a complex topic in meaningful way so attendees can create strategies to capitalize on the downward and upward trends.

Two Hands-on Hub sessions will focus on key management issues: monitoring and managing feed inputs – an element that represents the largest expense on most dairies – and maternity-pen care. Each session will be held both days of the conference, in the morning and afternoon. These sessions will provide attendees the unique opportunity to test new technologies and resources on site.

“Test tech tools that dial in the ration” led by Katie Raver, animal nutrition and field support specialist, Rock River Laboratory, Inc., will share and demonstrate new technologies for monitoring, measuring and tracking feed rations. Producers can test, compare and learn about new tools before making an investment for their operations. In addition to Raver, representatives from SCiO, trinamiX-BASF and Si-Ware Systems will be available for questions and demonstrations.

“Obstetrics and maternity care,” led by Dr. Ryan Breuer, DVM, clinical assistant professor, Large Animal Internal Medicine, UW-Madison, and Dr. Paul Merkatoris, DVM, assistant professor, School of Veterinary Medicine, UW-Madison, will feature hands-on, practical insights for managing close-up and maternity care. They will use a hands-on simulation model to outline the pre-, mid- and post-delivery signs to watch for. They’ll also demonstrate protocols for safe, healthy calf deliveries, identifying birthing scenarios needing assistance and safe handling practices for handlers and cows. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to depict specific birthing scenarios and ask about when to assist the cow and when to call a veterinarian.

For more details on these sessions and all others throughout the conference, view the program flyer.

The two-day event will also feature an expanded Hall of Ideas and Equipment show as well as Future of Success Youth Leadership sessions led by conference emcee Michael Hoffman to equip youth ages 15 to 18 with enhanced communications and self-awareness skills.
