In 2021, Wisconsin ranked second in the nation for the total number of certified organic farms with 1,455 farms, 8 percent of the nation’s total according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – 2021 Organic Survey.
There were 245,333 acres of certified organic farmland in Wisconsin. In 2021, the average organic farm in Wisconsin was 169 acres, compared to 281 acres for the U.S.
Milk from cows had the highest total value of sales for organic commodities in Wisconsin at $107 million in sales. Wisconsin produced 7 percent of national production. The state produced 23 percent of the Nation’s organic goat milk with sales totaling $469,806.
On Dec. 31, Wisconsin producers had 26,250 organic milk cows on hand and comprised 8 percent of the national inventory. Wisconsin’s certified organic milk cow inventory ranked fourth among other states.
Wisconsin ranked sixth in certified organic corn for grain and eighth in organic soybean production in the U.S. and comprised 7 and 6 percent of the national production, respectively. Farmers produced 15 percent of the nation’s organic corn for silage with sales totaling $647,407 in 2021.
Wisconsin ranked first in certified organic cranberry production in the U.S. and comprised 66 percent of the nation’s organic cranberries with sales totaling $3.45 million in 2021. Wisconsin ranked fourth in certified organic maple syrup production in the U.S. and comprised 4 percent of the nation’s organic maple syrup with sales totaling $2.94 million in 2021.
Wisconsin ranked first in certified organic snap beans production in the U.S. and comprised 37 percent of the nation’s organic snap beans with sales totaling $2.09 million in 2021.
