The latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Grain Stocks report surprised the marketplace — the bean numbers in particular surprised market advisor John Heinberg of Total Farm Marketing in West Bend.
Soybeans stored in all positions in Wisconsin on Sept. 1 totaled 7.82 million bushels, up 47 percent from Sept. 1, 2021. Of the total stocks, 19 percent were stored on-farm. Indicated disappearance for June-August 2022 was 21.2 million bushels, 25 percent above the 17 million bushels from the same quarter the previous year.
“As usual, the September grain stocks report doesn’t fail to bring something to the marketplace,” says John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend. “I was a little bit surprised by the jump in the bean yield from last year’s crop.”
Corn stored in Wisconsin on Sept. 1 totaled 72.2 million bushels, up 30 percent from the same time last year. Of the total stocks, 36 percent were stored on-farm. The June-August 2022 indicated disappearance totaled 125 million bushels, 2 percent above the 122 million bushels from the same quarter the previous year.
Small grain yields were also up from last year, but some crops saw record-low acres, according to the small grains report from Wisconsin’s state statistician.
Winter wheat production in Wisconsin was estimated at 18.7 million bushels, up 2 percent from 2021. Planted area, at 305,000 acres, was up 5 percent from last year. Winter wheat area harvested for grain was 240,000 acres, down 2 percent from last year. Winter wheat yield, at 78 bushels per acre, was up 3 bushels per acre from last year.
Oat production was estimated at 4.81 million bushels, up 27 percent from last year. Oats planted, at 140,000 acres, was a record low and down 20 percent from last year. Harvested area for grain was 65,000 acres, up 7 percent from the harvested acres in 2021. Oat yield, at 74 bushels per acre, was up 12 bushels per acre from last year.
Barley production, estimated at a record low 165,000 bushels, was down 56 percent from last year. Planted area, at 14,000 acres, was a record low and down 7 percent from 2021. Harvested area for grain, at 3,000 acres, was a record low and down 57 percent from last year. The Wisconsin barley yield was 55 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels per acre from last year.
Rye production in Wisconsin was estimated at 1.16 million bushels, up 41 percent from last year. Planted area, at 230,000 acres, was down 15 percent from 2021. Harvested area for grain, at 20,000 acres, was unchanged from last year. The Wisconsin rye yield was a record 58 bushels per acre, up 17 bushels per acre from last year.
