A graduate assistantship at UW-Madison in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences is available beginning in summer or fall 2023 with Dr. Jennifer Van Os and Dr. Kate Creutzinger.
The graduate student will work on a project to assess the impact of dry-off on dairy cows in automatic milking systems. The overall goal of this project is to improve dairy cow welfare during dry-off using alternative management options. This is a collaborative project between UW-Platteville and UW-Madison.
The student will complete their Master of Science at UW-Madison and perform research at UW-Platteville. The student will focus specifically on examining the behavior and udder physiology of dairy cows during dry-off. They will be involved in the development of data protocols, data collection, publication of research articles and a thesis.
The schools are looking for a motivated student who has a strong interest in dairy cattle behavior and welfare. The successful candidate should earn a BS degree from UW-Platteville in animal science, dairy science, biology, or a related field with an anticipated completion date no later than May 2023. Previous experience working with cattle or other large animals is recommended but not required.
