Darlington, Wisconsin is making some history offering the first affordable housing targeted specifically for farm workers in the area.
Nicole Solheim, vice president of development for Cinnaire, says the project itself got started more than a decade ago when Southwest Wisconsin Community Action Program (SWCAP) acknowledged the lack of affordable, quality, housing in the rural community for employees area agribusiness/farms were relying on.
Beginning in October, farm workers and their families will start moving into “The Meadows”. It’s a 32 unit housing complex that has two and three bedroom configurations available. Each has its own entrance, so they’re designed like townhouses.
Solheim says applicants will qualify based on housing income and finding a majority of their earned income from farming or agribusiness occupations. Units are still available. Apply by calling 800-578-2270, go to the Darlington City Hall or check out the application on line here.
