The Wisconsin DNR and DATCP have detected emerald ash borer for the first time in Menominee County. County forestry staff detected this ash tree-killing beetle along the roadside right-of-way of non-tribal land in the area of Legend Lake earlier this month.
The county is unique because it shares coterminous boundaries with the Menominee Indian Reservation. EAB was confirmed by USDA-APHIS on Aug. 17. The tree displayed characteristic symptoms of EAB presence, including woodpecker flecking, epicormic sprouts, and D-shaped exit holes.
Menominee County is the fifth new county detection of 2022 and marks the 66th county detection since EAB was first confirmed in the state in 2008. There are six Wisconsin counties that have not had an EAB detection.
There are no state or federal regulatory changes as a result of this detection. However, it is illegal to transport any ash firewood or unmilled ash logs onto any lands within the exterior boundaries of the Menominee Indian Reservation for use or storage on the reservation. EAB was federally deregulated as of Jan. 14, 2021, and Wisconsin instituted a statewide quarantine in 2018.
