Wisconsin farmers are gearing up for fall harvest. The USDA released the Crop Progress and Condition Report for Wisconsin and dug into specifics on exactly what things look like in the state.
Wisconsin had 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending August 21, 2022, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Much needed rain fell across portions of north-eastern Wisconsin, improving conditions for corn and soybeans there. Winter wheat harvest wrapped up in the southern part of the state.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 2 percent very short, 14 percent short, 77 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 3 percent very short, 22 percent short, 72 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus.
Corn silking was 94 percent and is 10 days behind last year and 2 days behind the 5-year average. Fifty-nine percent of corn had reached the dough stage also behind at 7 days behind last year and 1 day behind the average. Eleven percent of corn had reached the dent state. Corn condition was 77 percent good to excellent statewide yet down 1 percentage point from last week.
Soybeans blooming was 96 percent, also behind last year at 8 days behind but 1 day ahead of the average. Soybeans setting pods was 84 percent, 5 days behind last year and 1 day behind the average. Soybean condition was 78 percent good to excellent which is up 1 percentage point from last week.
Oats harvested for grain was 66 percent and are 2 days behind last year and 1 day behind the average. Oat condition was 81 percent good to excellent which is even with last week.
Potatoes harvested was at 15 percent, continuing the trend of being behind at 12 days behind last year and 8 days behind the average. Potato condition was 89 percent good to excellent and down 2 percentage points from last week.
Winter wheat harvested for grain was 93 percent, 9 days behind last year and 4 days behind the average.
The third cutting of alfalfa was reported at 87 percent complete and was 7 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of the average. The fourth cutting was 12 percent complete, 2 days behind last year and 1 day behind the average. All hay condition was reported 80 percent good to excellent condition which is up 2 percentage points from last week.
Pasture condition was rated 72 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week.
