As colleges prepare to welcome students back for the fall, they are looking forward to providing hands-on learning experiences again as things return to normal. With that, these schools are finding that students are drawn to those unique learning opportunities.
Brian Sloss is the Dean of the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point. He shares more about the variety of hands-on experiences that the college provides, but he first starts by previewing enrollment for this fall.
Dean Sloss says that enrollment should be on par with the 1,500 students that were in the college last year. He is optimistic, however, that this year’s enrollment should exceed that.
With this school year being the first “normal” year since the pandemic, Dean Sloss says that hands-on learning will be a primary part of the programs within the College of Natural Resources. One unique opportunity that graduates from the college participate in each summer is a six-week summer field experience where they are able to have hands-on experiences in other areas of study that aren’t their own.
Dean Sloss finds that these hands-on experiences give students the skills and knowledge they need to stand out in their field.
“We’ve helped set and establish, in some cases, the actual standards,” adds Dean Sloss. “We learn what the industry wants, we integrate that in our education, our graduates go out and work in the industry, and they help reinforce the knowledge base.”
