Parts of Wisconsin got heavy rain early last week, helping crops, but the state remains dry overall. This has allowed farmers to harvest their second cutting of hay, according to the latest crop progress and condition report from USDA.
The second cutting of alfalfa was reported at 66 percent complete, five days ahead of the five-year average. All hay condition was reported 81 percent good to excellent condition, up 2 percentage points from last week. And pasture condition was rated 75 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week.
Corn condition was 76 percent good to excellent statewide, the same as last week.
Soybean condition rated 78 percent good to excellent, up 2 percentage points from last week. Nearly 30 percent of beans are at or beyond the blooming stage.
Oats rate 84 percent good to excellent. Nearly 80 percent of oats are headed or beyond. More than 30 percent of oats are coloring.
Potato condition was 94 percent good to excellent, up 3 percentage points from last week.
Winter wheat condition was rated 85 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week. And nearly 80 percent of wheat is coloring.
