Ag educators realize the importance of finding new ways to deliver agricultural topics and give their students hands-on experiences. One high school is accomplishing this through the addition of a new greenhouse.
Luke Wiedenfeld is the Lake Mills FFA Advisor and Ag Teacher. He shares more about the school’s greenhouse that was just finished in May.
Wiedenfeld says that the greenhouse will give students the opportunity to make plans about what they’d like to grow and understand what goes into running a greenhouse. Some students will become “greenhouse managers” in the upcoming school year, where they will get a chance to take on more of a leadership role and ensure that all duties are being completed for the greenhouse.
Wiedenfeld hopes to hold plant sales and also grow vegetables for use in food science classes. Some students mentioned that they are excited to make salsa.
The greenhouse will see its first visitors from July 6-8 while Lake Mills FFA hosts its first “Junior FFA Camp” during summer school.
The greenhouse was made possible through a 2019 Jefferson County Farm Technology Days Grant. Wiedenfeld sends a special thank-you to Lake Mills Superintendent Tonya Olson and Lake Mills High School Principal Cale Vogel for their support. He would also like to extend a thank-you to the Lake Mills FFA Alumni, the Larry Peter Memorial, Rural Mutual Insurance, and the Charlie Untz Family for their generous donations.
