County fairs bring out a wide variety of animals that have been carefully cared for and prepped for the fair. While fairgoers may be used to seeing cattle and pigs at the fair, one animal that is a great option for exhibitors who are short on space is the rabbit.
Barb Semb is the President of the Wisconsin State Rabbit Breeders Association. She shares what kind of work goes into preparing a rabbit for the fair and what it looks like to show rabbits.
Semb mentions that there can be up to 50 different rabbit breeds at any given fair. These rabbits can range anywhere from $10 to several hundred dollars.
Semb also shares that rabbits do not require extensive care. They should be fed a commercial pellet and given fresh water daily, but Semb explains that they do not need much grooming.
The most important thing to look out for when housing a rabbit at the fair is keeping them cool, according to Semb. A go-to method for keeping rabbits comfortable is placing frozen water bottles in their cage. Aside from keeping them cool, the rabbit exhibitors will be working hard to keep them calm and ultimately help them develop “good table manners” when shown.
