Despite some heavy rains this past week, most Wisconsin farmers wrapped up planting and shifted field activities to cutting hay and controlling weeds.
The first cutting of alfalfa was reported at 84 percent complete, a week behind last year and a day behind the five-year average, according to the latest crop progress and condition report from USDA. The second cutting was 1 percent complete. All hay condition was reported 82 percent good to excellent condition, up 1 percentage point from last week.
Clark County Extension Senior Outreach Specialist Richard Halopka gives Mid-West Farm Report a forage update, including how hay supply and prices are looking. He warns you may see hay condition fall in next week’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop report.
