The Wisconsin cherry crop is looking promising so far this growing season, and folks across the state will soon be able to enjoy pies, drinks, and other tart treats.
Carrie Lautenbach-Viste of Lautenbach’s Orchard in Fish Creek shares how the growing season has gone this spring.
Lautenbach-Viste says that the wild spring weather had very little effect on the cherry crop. Although the warm weather accelerated the spring bloom, the cherries are right on track and should be ready for harvest by mid-July.
Lautenbach-Viste explained that the cherry trees go through a process called “June drop” where some of the green cherries will drop from the tree if there are too many for the tree to support. By July, or around 60 days after blossom, the cherries will be ready for harvest
Lautenbach’s Orchard features freshly picked sweet and tart cherries, as well as pick-your-own tart cherries. Lautenbach-Viste shared that late July is the best time to get out and pick tart cherries at the orchard.
