Warm weather means that it is almost mosquito season in Wisconsin. The pesky little bugs that hang around through the summer months are reappearing in full force, but there are ways that people can defend themselves.
PJ Liesch, Director of the UW-Madison Insect Diagnostic Lab, outlines some tips for facing mosquitoes as well as ticks this summer.
Liesch says that mosquitoes in Wisconsin do carry several diseases, but they do not pose much of a problem in the state. Ticks also carry diseases, with the most notable being Lyme disease, but the disease will not be transmitted if the tick is removed relatively quickly.
Liesch recommends wearing long sleeved shirts, applying insect repellent, and conducting daily tick checks to help protect against mosquitoes and ticks. He also says that preventing standing water will help to decrease mosquito population growth.
