America’s largest pheasant farm is ramping up its biosecurity measures to help prevent their flock from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
Owner of MacFarlane Pheasants, Bill MacFarlane, says each March and April when HPAI is usually most prevalent, they are at their lowest capacity of the year which helps reduce their risk of infection. He also credits their refined biosecurity measures – like limiting farm visitors, increasing hygienic measures, and restricting interaction with other avian species – for their ability to keep HPAI off the farm.
Since 1929, MacFarlane Pheasants has been known for their chicks, food products, eggs and more both in the U.S. and internationally. MacFarlane says that HPAI has restricted their business this year and in the past, but with the right paperwork and market for their products, demand has increased dramatically.
