Prices are rising across the board due to increased transportation costs, bottlenecks in the supply chain and labor shortages seen throughout the pork industry. 4-H and FFA exhibitors across the state are starting to feel the financial impact as the 2022 show season kicks off this spring.
Taylor Crouch, the president of the Wisconsin Show Pig Association, says that although prices are rising, feed is becoming more efficient and genetics are advancing. He says exhibitors have an opportunity to focus on these positives of the year, instead of focusing only on the monetary aspect.
Despite the challenges brought on for the show industry since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, he says that breeders, exhibitors and their families are a resilient group of people. Livestock shows have persevered regardless, which he says will continue in 2022.
