The month of March is maple syrup month at the MacKenzie Center in Poynette, Wisconsin. The MacKenzie center is the DNR’s education facility, and they tap over 100 trees at this time of year with school-aged kids.
Ariel Christian, the maple program director at the center, says they welcomed just over 1,000 students this year.
Student tour groups not only gain hands-on industry experience tapping trees at the MacKenzie Center, but they also learn the history and culture of sugaring in Wisconsin. Ariel says that one way for students to connect to nature is to harvest sap and have an opportunity to taste the product, MacKenzie Gold, at the end of the tour.
Tours are directed towards 4th grade students, but the MacKenzie center will be hosting a Maple Festival on April 2.
