UW-Platteville recently welcomed Pioneer Sweets to campus, a student-managed ice cream business that got on its feet thanks to a grant from Compeer Financial. In order to focus on expansion, they are also borrowing money from the UW Dairy Innovation Hub.
Dairy Science Professor Tera Montgomery advises Pioneer Sweets. She says they’ve been discussing having a dairy plant on campus for nearly 10 years. Student employees now have an opportunity to develop new flavors, work with clients, and navigate food production licensing and regulation.
She says that in the future, they will have a fully operating retail space, and will use milk from Platteville’s own cows.
Pioneer Sweets is also giving back to their community by donating a portion of their proceeds towards purchasing dairy products for Pioneer Provisions, a campus based food pantry.
