The Wisconsin Pork Association (WPA) recognized scholarship recipients during the organization’s annual meeting held on February 3rd in conjunction with the Corn/Soy Expo in Wisc. Dells. Eight high school seniors and college students were awarded a total of $6900 in scholarships.
WPA Scholarship
This scholarship is presented each year to high school seniors pursuing further education with an interest in agriculture. In 2022, Amber Fietzer, Manawa will receive $500 and Brayden Peter will receive $400. Amber will be attending Concordia University Wisconsin in the fall. Majoring in Biomedical sciences. And hopes to work on genetically improving swine health in the future. Brayden will be attending UW Platteville in the fall. Majoring in animal science with the goal of becoming a nutritionist.
Whitmore Memorial Scholarship
The Whitmore Memorial Scholarship was established as a legacy to the late Rex Whitmore, a master statesman and communicator who served as the first executive director of the Wisconsin Pork Association. Applicants for this scholarship must be a junior or senior at University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Platteville or University of Wisconsin -River Falls. Caley Haas is the recipient of the $1500 scholarship. Caley is studying Animal Science at the UW Madison.
Gunderson Memorial Scholarship
The Wisconsin Pork Association, in cooperation with the family of Buell Gunderson, established a scholarship program in 2007 to recognize the many contributions that Buell Gunderson made to the Wisconsin pork industry. Gunderson, together with his wife, Bernice, served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Wisconsin Pork Association for 20 plus years and assisted in growing the organization from its initial roots to the successful organization that it is today–sponsoring scholarships, developing youth programs and helping to support the pork producers of the state.
Individuals who have shown considerable dedication and involvement in the pork industry are eligible for this scholarship. Consideration is given to youth who have established their own production herd, been involved on their family operation, or shown specific interest in pork production or livestock judging.
This year, Brandon Weigel has been selected to receive a $1000 scholarship and Mia Hillebrand will receive a $750 scholarship. Brandon is currently a junior at UW-Platteville double majoring in animal science and agribusiness. His goals after graduation are to obtain a position in a field related to animal science or agribusiness. Mia is currently a student at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in the Agriculture Business and Technology – Animal Science program. She then plans to attend the University of Wisconsin – Platteville to earn a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education. With aspirations to one day be an Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor.
WPA Fredrich Memorial Scholarship
The Fredrich Memorial Scholarship was established in 2018 through funding from the Southeast Wisconsin Pork Producers. This scholarship honors Clarence Fredrich and is offered to students in Walworth, Racine, and Kenosha counties.
This year’s recipients are Maddie Erdmann, Micheal Schaal, and Maya Ehlen. Maddie Erdmann will receive a $1000 scholarship. Maddie is currently attending UW Platteville working on becoming a high school agriculture teacher. Micheal Schaal will also receive $1000. Micheal is still deciding between UW River Falls, UW Platteville, and Iowa State. Pursuing a degree in dairy science and Ag Business. Maya Ehlen will receive a $750 scholarship. And will be attending UW River Falls. Pursing a degree in Food Science and Technology.
