The National Pork Board’s sustainability goals focus on the welfare of the pigs, people and the planet. Stephanie Hoff and Dr. Brett Kaysen, vice president of sustainability for the National Pork Board, discuss the WE CARE principles that emphasize taking care of employees, which in turn improve animal welfare and make environmental sustainability possible.
Kaysen says pig farmers understand they need to uplift their employees and communities, because without people, the pig industry doesn’t run.
Today’s labor shortage is putting a bend in the livestock supply chain, especially the pork processing plants, Kaysen says. During a period of tight labor supply, he says more than money is needed to keep and retain employees. He notes today’s workforce wants to be invested in by either sending them to leadership conferences or assisting them in furthering their education. Other key priorities include good benefits and a good workplace culture, he adds.
In addition, the National Pork Board has put priority in mental health. He says the board has been an education arm, providing resources for the pork industry in regards to mental health.
