As the weather draws colder, it gets me excited for gun hunting season. This time of year is peak rutting season for whitetails in Wisconsin. I am so ready for the season to start. I have been hunting since 2013 and since then, I have shot 2 bucks and 5 does. My brothers, my dad and I all hunt in our woods in the valley. We each have our spots that we like to hunt in. I like the honey hole, my dad likes the back 40, my brother Justin likes the ridge, and my brother Dillan likes the trail that leads from our cabin. Sometimes we switch it up, but we usually keep it the same. I usually sit in a chair when I hunt while the boys like to hunt in tree stands, easier for me to move. Since we are dairy farmers, we milk earlier than normal on opening day so we can get in the woods as soon as possible.
One of my favorite parts of hunting is the adrenaline rush. When I catch a glimpse of a deer, my heart beats quicker. Trying to stay as quiet and as still as you can while getting the best aim, can be challenging but it’s also part of the fun. And once you pull the trigger, that adrenaline is released hoping you have a deer down. Once you see that it’s down, your heart rushes with excitement and joy. These feelings are what I love about hunting.
I also love the bonding between me and my family. Each one of us serve a role in a successful hunting season. The boys and I all help each other locate deer and communicate when we see them going someone’s direction. And when one of us has a deer down, we help each other clean it and load it up. My mother also plays an important role during hunting season. She always makes homemade chili, bread and Scotcheroos. Our mom is our best chef and biggest supporter.
