EnTech Solutions and Northern Biogas LLC formed a joint venture to provide a sustainable energy future utilizing local ag in Middleton.
The renewable natural gas facility uses biogas and generators to create energy. Cow manure from local farms is processed in three air-tight digester tanks. The tanks are heated to about 100 degrees — like a cow’s stomach. Microbes thrive in these conditions, and they consumer solids in the manure while releasing methane gas.
Instead of going into the atmosphere, the methane is captured at the top of the digester and converted into electricity sold to Madison Gas & Electric. Additional site updates are underway, after which the facility will produce renewable natural gas that will be injected into the pipeline on the east side of Madison.
Renewable natural gas is a clean fuel to burn. Demand is growing for it on the West Coast, says EnTech President Scott Romenesko.
The updates include integrating distributed energy technology, including EnTech Solution’s DCentrIQ platform. By adding this solar and battery storage solution to the facility, the value of the renewable natural gas in the marketplace will improve, according to EnTech.
