As a busy college student, it can be hard to find time to go back home, however, when you do, be sure to make good use of the time you are back.
Last weekend I came home on a Friday afternoon right after my precalculus class and when I got home, I came home to my brother leaving for his friend’s wedding rehearsal and my parents getting ready to milk cows all by themselves. Whenever I come home, I always ask what’s new on the farm, and when I asked last weekend, a lot had happened since the last time I was home. I was home two weeks ago and since then we had 5 heifers calve, 1 dry cow calve, and we had 3 dry cows and 2 dry heifers in the herd as well. So, after learning about the status of our herd, I decided it would be helpful if I milked cows with my mom and dad, so they weren’t milking alone. Some of these fresh heifers were still skittish when coming into the parlor so it took a little longer to bring in groups of cows and we had to worry about not milking the dry cows and to make sure we didn’t have two cows who needed the bucket on one side at a time. It was a lot to keep track of.
Day number two back home, I am back in the barn. My brother was at his friend’s wedding, so I helped my parents milk again. As a farm kid, this was not something I complained about or an inconvenience to me. Between 5 and 7 pm will always be set aside for chores or supper when back home. It was nice being back in the barn with my family. It was nice to come back to familiarity and take a break from college life.
