Key Expo Components: Youth & Food

World Dairy Expo is Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 and it will feature more than Wisconsin’s quality dairy genetics. High school and college-aged students will be represented by the thousands.

Youth will start Expo on Sunday with contests and shows will continue through the week. Beyond the red shavings, students can look forward to getting a head start in their career in the dairy industry. World Dairy Expo communications manager Katie Schmitt says Expo is all about networking and making connections. The international show boasts Career Connections — Expo’s take on a career fair Oct. 1 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Students can meet companies and farms from across the U.S.

The career fair is free — just fill out a form ahead of time at worlddairyexpo.com. The youth show contests are free to enter until the day prior to the contest. The judging contests and national FFA events are finalized. Students can also get involved with World Dairy Expo as a volunteer or a paid workers.

If you’re thinking about what you’ll be eating at World Dairy Expo, attendees can find the next generation in agriculture at the UW-Madison Cheese Stand — operated by student organizations as a fundraiser for their organizations. Expo-goers can taste different featured cheeses each day.

Outside of cheese, the ice cream stand is manned by local FFA chapters as a fundraiser. And beyond those staples, the Expo has two food courts featuring local food trucks and more Wisconsin products. In addition, newly relocated to the Arena Building, The Tanbark is a full-service bar and restaurant. Schmitt says World Dairy Expo has something for everyone.
