Rainfall was at an all-time high this past weekend in the Coulee Region. On Saturday, August 7th, the National Weather Service recorded 5.59 inches fell in La Crosse, which makes it the wettest day on record in the city. Roads went underwater, cars were splashed on and some even stalled because of high waters.
In Vernon County, Westby recorded 4.58 inches and Viroqua recorded 1.93 inches on the 7th. In Monroe County, Cashton recorded around 2.75 inches and Sparta recorded 2.34 inches. Trempealeau recorded 3.83 inches and Black River Falls recorded 3.86 inches.
These numbers are just the rainfall totals for Saturday, August 7th. It continued to rain through Saturday night, Sunday, and into Monday morning.
It started raining on our farm in Cashton around 1:15 am Saturday and was on and off all day. When we went to check our land in the valley after the afternoon rainfall Saturday, most of our fences surrounding the pastures where we graze our heifers in the summer, were washed away. But that night, we drove down to a little nearby town, called Melvina. The baseball field was completely flooded, and road bridges were washed over and covered in debris. Corn fields, bean fields, backyards, homes, barns, pastures, and more, all flooded. This wasn’t just in Melvina, many other areas were in the same situation, such as Coon Valley, WI.
“When you think you have it bad, someone else always has it worse.” We thought we had bad flooding in our area, but we had nothing compared to other areas. In Boscobel, WI, there was an EF-3 tornado that ripped through Saturday afternoon. Buildings, crops, and animals all destroyed in its path.
The destruction caused will take weeks to months to repair, so these cities and villages will need all the help they can get. Be on the lookout for ways you can help with the damage or share kind words with those who were affected.
