Farmers markets are springing up this summer and small, local businesses are gaining new customers. I visited the Sparta, WI farmers market which is held in a unique location. Located in downtown Sparta, the Mueller Square farmers market is an actual cobble stone area with vendor huts and open sheltered vendor sites. This market also has a stage for performing musicians and educational activities. When you enter the square under the “Mueller Square” arch, you are greeted by a variety of vendors and products. Some of the products include, fresh picked flower bouquets, local honey and bee display, succulent plants, soaps and beauty products, various produce items, farm fresh meat and dairy products, jams and jellies and much more.
The market was buzzing with people, and with bees. One of our family neighbors, has they own family bee and honey business. They had a display case with a beehive to show the honeybees at work. They even marked the queen bee with a white dot to distinguish her from the rest. Their daughter also makes her own lip gloss and soap made with their bee’s honey. As family friends and small business owners, I purchased a few of their products. It was a satisfying feeling to see small businesses thriving and knowing that I was supporting them.
