Members of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Collegiate Farm Bureau have been meeting regularly online due to gathering restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this challenge, their members are continuing to find ways to be involved.
Several of the club’s members competed in the Wisconsin Young Farmer and Agriculturist’s “Be the Babe” contest to test their skills at farm broadcasting. Competitors submitted an audio recording of themselves reading a daily news and market report. The overall winner of the contest was UWRF member was Collin Weltzein.
This January, the Young Farmer and Agriculturist program also held their annual Collegiate Farm Bureau Discussion Meet. This contest serves to stimulate individuals’ ideas surrounding current issues relating to agriculture and develop research and discussion skills. Three students from UWRF competed, including Jared Mack, Alyssa Seitz, and Matthew Fischer.
The topic discussed was “Connectivity underpins the modern economy. What mix of investment and policy initiatives can provide reliable broadband access to farmers, ranchers and rural America?” Jared Mack won the contest, and will represent UWRF and the state of Wisconsin at the American Farm Bureau’s Collegiate Discussion Meet later this year. We are very proud of his accomplishments and wish him the best of luck.
Looking forward, the chapter hopes to have more in-person club events. We have members looking forwards to the AG Lead Conference, Ag Day at the Capitol activities and we will be electing new officers at our April Meeting. The chapter is also working with other organizations on campus to have an ‘Ag Day on Campus’ like no other. The theme for 2021 is “Every Farm Tells A Story.” We encourage any and all University of Wisconsin- River Falls students to get involved with the Collegiate Farm Bureau Chapter before the nearing end of the semester.
