Julia Nunes of Tilden has been at many events where she’s seen Wisconsin’s Alice in Dairyland, the state’s top dairy ambassador, working. This weekend, she’ll be among six finalists to serve as this year’s Alice in Dairyland.
Nunes is one of four from the WAXX 104.5 listening area who are finalists for the paid state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection job.
“It’s kind of crazy that I could be Alice in Dairyland,” she said.
The Friday and Saturday events in Walworth County — where this year’s Alice in Dairyland will be named — will be different than past years because of the coronavirus pandemic. The finals will be presented only online, but she said it means the same to her as it might have in a normal year.
Nunes grew up working on her family’s Chippewa County farm, which she said will help her pass along the messages about Wisconsin agriculture.
“It’s a lifestyle. I can share that because of my experiences,” she said.
Nunes, a University of Minnesota graduate, already has served in an ambassador’s role, having been the Northern Wisconsin State Fair’s Fairest of the Fair.
She talked about the finals with WAXX farm director Bob Bosold:
