The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Wisconsin welcomes new Assistant State Soil Scientist, Andrew Paolucci. Andrew will focus his efforts on leading soil health activities including maintenance, interpretation and distribution of soil survey information across the state. He will assist with conservation planning, environmental assessment and natural resources management. Andrew will also be a resource for leading education and training to staff, partners and customers.
Paolucci is a soil scientist and outdoorsman from the small state of Rhode Island. His dream of becoming a soil scientist began at the University of Rhode Island. His senior year, he participated on a soil judging team, traveling to West Virginia to compete in a national contest. The experience sparked his curiosity about soil genesis, morphology, and other subdisciplines of soil science.
As a graduate student he completed a study on soil health (dynamic soil properties) and developed several ecological site concepts for soils; he partnered with several NRCS employees during his education, learning and working with the agency. In 2014, Andrew joined NRCS as a Soil Scientist in California. He has experience in soil survey, soil science, ecological site development, technical soil services, coding and design of soil map units, soil interpretations, educational teaching, research projects, and more.
Andrew looks forward to working with Wisconsin NRCS staff, partners, farmers and landowners as the Assistant State Soil Scientist to support the soil health and soil science programs. He also looks forward to exploring Wisconsin and ice fishing.
