For those looking for a way to give support to those that need it in a time of crisis, look no further than “Adopt a Dairy Cow.” This unique program gives people a chance to put their money towards helping food banks and Wisconsin dairy farmers at the same time.
According to Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin’s website, “when you “adopt” a dairy cow, you are making a donation that we (SHFB) will use to purchase milk and distribute it to those facing hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. You can choose to “adopt” the milk production from one morning for only $20, a day’s worth of milk for $36 or a week’s worth for $252! You can help those struggling with hunger and help reduce the ‘Milk Gap.'”
According to Kris Tazelaar, Director of Marketing and Communications at Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin, the “Milk Gap” is the relationship between the amount of milk that food banks are able provide and the amount of milk that is needed. As their website mentions, the food bank is able to provide 70,000 gallons of milk per year. But, “the reality is if we hit that target we will have provided just one gallon of milk to less than two-thirds of the people we serve each year. One gallon of milk per person per year is just a small fraction of what the USDA recommends to maintain a healthy and balanced diet.” This is where “adopting” a dairy cow comes to the rescue.
