We’ve got the latest update on Wisconsin dairies beginning to dump large loads of milk across the state. More details will be available as the day unfolds, so check back often.
Wisconsin’s Acting Ag Secretary, Randy Romanski, will be conference calling with industry leaders this afternoon. Here’s what we know right now.
- WDATCP and the State of Wisconsin will be contacting U.S.D.A to request that they immediately start purchasing dairy products to help those people facing food insecurity in light of covid-19.
- They will be requesting that the Federal Government reopen the Dairy Margin Coverage program through USDA’s Farm Service Agency.
- They’re reminding impacted dairies to follow the protocol set up by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and WDATCP in a memorandum generated last week.
- They’re asking impacted dairies to make sure that, if they’re forced to dump milk, they maintain a record on volumes that are dumped for future reference.
- Farms that need immediate assistance are being asked to call the Farm Assistance Hotline: 800-942-2472

Why is milk getting dumped when I hear that schools can’t get enough milk to give to the kids when they’re begging up lunches

This breaks my heart. At nearly 50, I’m one of the only adults I know who enjoys a tall glass of cold milk at nearly every meal. I’ve said countless times in my life, I could never become a vegan because I could never voluntarily give up all the joys of dairy products. Meat? Sure…I’d struggle, but I could do it. Milk and cheese and cottage cheese and cream and all the rest? Not a chance.
My thoughts are definitely with our farmers…I’ve lived in the Midwest all my life (Illinois, Michigan and now Indiana). These folks matter to me so much! I’ll be following your suggestions from the other post on what folks like me can do to help.
